Dark Web Scan
Private Growth Equity Firm
The client requested a dark web scan to assess potential exposure of sensitive corporate information. Limited visibility into credential compromise and external attack surface risks created uncertainty around the organization’s cybersecurity posture and potential downstream impacts across the business.
Engagement timeline: 2 weeks
Assets reviewed: Corporate IP addresses, domains, email addresses, and targeted keywords
Methodology: Automated threat intelligence scanning across a continuously updated dark web database containing approximately 475 billion recaptured data points
The engagement team worked closely with the client to identify relevant scan attributes, initiate targeted scans, interpret results, and translate findings into clear, actionable initiatives aligned with the client’s risk priorities.
The engagement team collected and analyzed key organizational attributes against an extensive dark web dataset to identify potential areas of exposure.
Key outcomes included:
- Identification of potential credential exposure involving priority accounts, including leadership and administrative users
- Detection of externally facing IP addresses with open ports requiring validation and secure configuration
- Delivery of a prioritized set of remediation initiatives to reduce immediate and longer-term risk
Based on the findings, Hilco Global Cyber Advisors recommended seven initiatives, including:
- 4 high-priority initiatives
- 2 medium-priority initiatives
- 1 low-priority initiative
The initial assessment led to follow-on strategy and advisory opportunities, including:
- Expanded dark web scanning across the portfolio
- Microsoft 365 assessment and hardening
- Portfolio maturity and risk assessments
- Operational resilience program review
- Third-party risk management (TPRM) program review
